In rhetoric the public sphere is a physical or more commonly a virtual place where citizens exchange ideas information attitudes and opinions. Having spent a considerable part of my professional and academic life thinking and writing about the public sphere it still amazes me how nebulous this concept is and how difficult it is to be clear about what we mean when we talk about the public sphere. The public sphere is generally conceived as the social space in which different opinions are expressed problems of general concern are discussed and collective solutions are developed communicatively thus the public sphere is the central arena for societal communication in large scale . 1 while working on an article on habermas and dewey in the early 1990s i asked habermas if dewey had influenced him and he responded that deweys strong notion of liberal democracy of politics and the public and of the active connection between theory and practice made a strong impression on him see antonio and kellner 1992 for details
